If your organization (e.g., university, laboratory, student group, professional society) is looking for training on scientific communication skills, I am delivering online and in-person workshops designed specifically for your needs.
Presently, I have content that ranges from 25 minutes to a full week. A popular format during lockdown is two or three three-hour online workshops.
For example, I have a full-day (9:30–3:45, including breaks) self-contained workshop “Publishing Journal Articles” that includes:
1. Why publish?
2. How do I publish?
3. How do peer review, editors, and journals work?
4. Is my science publishable?
5. Where do I publish?
6. How do I prepare my work for submission?
7. How do I attract an audience? (e.g., title, abstract, introduction)
8. How do I overcome barriers to writing?
9. How do I respond to reviews?
10. How can I develop my career?
I also have modules on the following content:
posters
presentations
conference networking
writing precisely, coherently and concisely
how to reference and cite
For in-person workshops, interactive sessions play an important part in teaching scientific communication skills, especially if attendees are using their own writing samples, posters, or presentations. I include exercises that strengthen a person’s writing and presenting skills. There are also role-playing exercises so that attendees can experience the tough decisions made by a journal editor or research-group leader.
